Florida HIE Update: Over 50 Florida Hospitals Are Now Receiving Data Through the Florida HIE Services

Nov 5, 2018 | In the news

Five large health systems– which together include over 50 hospital locations across Florida – are now receiving patient information through the Encounter Notification Service® (ENS®) offered by the Florida Health Information Exchange.

Adventist Health System, Memorial Healthcare System, Orlando Health, BayCare Health System, and Nemours Children’s Hospital are subscribed to receive information on over 500,000 of their patients. ENS provides real-time notice of patient healthcare encounters, allowing these connected health systems to improve care coordination and transitions of care.

Christopher Eakes, BayCare Health System’s Director of Population Health, Health Information Exchange and Enterprise Integration, said “As we continue to advance as a population health services organization, we are continually evaluating opportunities to improve our ability to manage our patients’ continuum of care. The state’s ENS program was an easy choice due to its ease of implementation, cost-effectiveness and, most importantly, the expansive scale of the offering.”

Adventist Health System’s Senior Director of Interoperability, Jason Aspinwall, said: “Through the use of the ENS alerting system, Adventist Health System’s Population Health Services Organization has been able to accurately monitor out-of-network admissions, better facilitate transfers where needed, and help with timely discharge planning and follow-up for our patients.”

Notifications are generated on inpatient and emergency department encounters by over 215 participating hospitals statewide. In Florida, ENS delivers over 900,000 encounter notifications each month to subscribing health systems, physician practices, community health centers, accountable care organizations, and payers. Together, these organizations are using ENS to facilitate post-hospital discharge care coordination and reduce avoidable readmissions for over 8 million Floridians. All data exchange through ENS is patient authorized and HIPAA compliant.
